Cookies Policy

The University of Luxembourg Competence Centre (hereinafter referred to as the Competence Centre) would like to inform you of the security and confidentiality measures it has implemented and the fair use it makes of the personal data it processes.

In this policy on cookies, we wish to provide you with transparent information on how we place, use and store cookies on your device when you consult our Site and to present you with the options that allow you to manage and delete them.

Our partners or third-party companies issue and use other cookies for purposes that these third parties determine and are responsible for processing them.

1. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text, image or software files that may be deposited and/or read on your device when you access our Site. The word “device”, when used in this Cookies Policy, refers in particular to computers, smartphones, tablets and any other device used to access the Internet.

Cookies may be (i) session cookies, which means that they are deleted from your terminal once the session and browser are closed; or (ii) persistent cookies, which means that they will be stored on your terminal until they expire or are deleted.

Cookies can have a number of functions, including the following:

  • Guarantee the security and performance of the Site;
  • Track the way you use our Site in order to improve it;
  • Improve your user experience by adapting the content of our Site and offering you more relevant advertising and content on our Site;
  • Send you personalised advertising based in particular on your browsing history and online preferences;
  • Save your preferences and settings for using our Site (e.g. language, time zone, etc.);
  • Share content on social networks.

2. What categories of data are collected?

The information stored by cookies placed on your device may relate to the following, within the limits of their retention period:

  • the web pages you have visited using this device;
  • the advertisements you have clicked on;
  • the type of browser you are using;
  • your IP address;
  • and any other information you have provided on our Site.

Cookies may contain personal data covered by our Privacy Policy.

3. What type of cookies do we use and for what purposes?

The cookies we use on our Site are classified into different categories.

3.1 Strictly necessary cookies (mandatory)

These cookies are essential to enable the Site to function correctly. They may include, for example, cookies that collect session identifiers and identification data, cookies that enable a Site’s interface to be personalised (for example, for the choice of language or the presentation of a service) or certain audience measurement cookies.

3.2 Preference cookies (subject to your consent)

These cookies are used to personalise and offer the content and functions of the Sites. They are used, for example, to remember the preferences indicated during your visit to our Site and to improve our Site and your user experience.

3.3 Audience measurement cookies (subject to consent, except under certain conditions)

These cookies enable us and our partners to understand how users arrive at our Site, to measure the number of visitors to our Site and also to analyse the way in which visitors navigate the Site or to reconstruct their browsing patterns.

This helps us to improve the way our Site works by ensuring, for example, that users can easily find what they are looking for.

These cookies may be exempt from consent when they are strictly necessary for the operation of the Site in accordance with article 3.1.

Otherwise, they are subject to consent in accordance with this article 3.3.

4. In this context, who places the cookies on your device (Competence Center or a partner)?

When you select the types of cookies that you authorise on your device, these cookies may be placed directly by us or by one of our partners.

From a practical point of view, this means that when you authorise the installation of certain so-called “third-party” cookies on your device, our partners will also be able to access the information they contain (such as, for example, your browsing statistics when you authorise third-party analysis cookies) in compliance with our Privacy Policy and those of our partners. Our partners are :

Name Domain Type Expiry
Google Recaptcha www.google.com Preference cookies 6 months
Google Analytics www.google.com Audience measurement cookies 1 year
Google Ads www.google.com Audience measurement cookies 3 months
Meta Ads www.facebook.com Audience measurement cookies 3 months

5. Who has access to cookies?

Access to the data we collect using cookies is limited, both for internal and external recipients:

  • internally, it is only accessible to authorised departments of the University of Luxembourg Competence Centre ;
  • externally, it can only be accessed by advertisers (Google and Facebook) or technical service providers who may place cookies on your terminal and/or administer them.

6. How do I manage cookies?

To consult the different categories of cookies that we use on the Site and to configure your choices, you can click on the “Cookie management” link at the bottom right-hand corner of the website. You can change your preferences at any time (withdraw or give your consent again).

Please note that the use of cookies strictly necessary for the proper functioning of the Site does not require your consent. This is why the “strictly necessary cookies” option is activated beforehand in our cookie management tool and is not optional.

By refusing certain types of cookies, we will not be able to optimise your user experience on our Site and certain parts may not function properly.

By default, we save your choices regarding cookies on a given device for a maximum period of 6 months. If you change your mind about the preferences you have expressed regarding cookies, you can update your choices at any time by consulting the cookie management module accessible at the bottom of the page. You will be asked again to make a choice every 12 months.

7. How can you control or deactivate cookies?

If you do not want us to place cookies (with the exception of functional cookies) on your computer, you can block and/or delete cookies via your browser settings.

Most browsers have default settings that accept the installation of cookies. If you wish, you can choose to accept all cookies or reject them systematically, or choose to accept certain cookies depending on who is sending them.

You can also configure your browser to accept or refuse cookies on a case-by-case basis before they are installed. However, some services and functions may not function correctly or may not be accessible if you block all or some of the cookies.

Don’t forget to configure all the browsers on your different terminals (tablets, smartphones, computers, etc.).

To manage cookies and your choices, the configuration of each browser is different. This is described in your browser’s help menu, which will tell you how to modify your cookie preferences.
